5 Things You Need to Do Before Your Microneedling Session (Seriously, Don't Skip These)
So you've got your microneedling pen. Maybe it just arrived and you've been staring at it on your bathroom counter for the past hour, half-excited, half-nervous. Or maybe you've done this before and you're getting back into your routine after a little break.
Either way — you want results. Real, noticeable results. Not just a red face and a "was that worth it?" moment.
Here's the thing though: what you do before your session matters just as much as the treatment itself. The prep work is where most people cut corners, and it's exactly why some people see dramatic skin transformation while others feel like they wasted an afternoon.
Let's fix that. Here are the 5 things you need to do before you even pick up your device.
1. Get Your Skin Into the Right Headspace
Think of your skin like a canvas. You wouldn't paint over a dirty, irritated surface and expect it to look good, right?
For about 3 to 7 days leading up to your session, step away from the heavy-hitters in your routine — retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, physical exfoliants, that glycolic acid toner you love. All of it. These ingredients make your skin more sensitive, and running needles over already-irritated skin is a recipe for inflammation you really don't want.
Sun exposure is another one. Try to avoid it for at least 24 hours before your session — and if you absolutely can't, wear a proper broad-spectrum sunscreen. Sunburned or UV-stressed skin doesn't respond well to microneedling, and you could end up with more redness and discomfort than results.
If you're treating areas on your body, also hold off on shaving, waxing, or laser hair removal in that zone for the week before. Let the skin breathe.
One more thing: if you're on anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen, it's worth knowing that these can actually work against you here. Microneedling works because it triggers your body's natural inflammatory healing response — that's what sends collagen production into overdrive. Blocking that with NSAIDs kind of defeats the point. That said, please talk to your doctor before stopping any medication. This is a "heads up," not medical advice.
And if you have active acne, a breakout, cold sores, or any kind of skin infection happening right now — wait. Needling over broken or infected skin can spread bacteria and make things significantly worse. The treatment will still be there in a week or two.
2. Set Up Your Station Like You Mean It
This sounds boring but honestly, having everything ready before you start makes such a difference. You don't want to be fumbling around mid-session with serum on your hands looking for your gloves.
Here's what you'll want on hand:
Your SKINDELÚX Microneedling Pen, fully charged. Check it before you start — nothing worse than a device dying halfway through.
Your needle cartridge suited to what you're treating (fine lines, texture, scarring — they all call for different depths).
Gloves, a hair tie or headband, a clean container, isopropyl alcohol at 70% or above, your serum (more on that in a second), and clean towels.
Pick a clean surface to work on and wipe it down before you start. Dust and bacteria getting into your device or onto your skin mid-session is something you can easily avoid with 60 seconds of prep.
3. Sterilise Your Cartridge. Every. Single. Time.
I can't stress this enough.
Before each session, soak your needle cartridge in isopropyl alcohol or spray it thoroughly on the needle head. Give it a couple of minutes, then let it air dry before you attach it to your pen.
It feels like an extra step. It is an extra step. But it's the step that prevents infection, and that's not a risk worth skipping.
Your SKINDELÚX pen is an investment in your skin. Treat it like one.
4. Double Cleanse Before You Begin
Your skin needs to be completely clean before needles go anywhere near it. No exceptions.
Do a double cleanse using a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser. The goal is to remove every trace of makeup, SPF, oil, and product residue without stripping your skin. A soft silicone cleansing brush works well here — gentle enough to not irritate, thorough enough to actually do the job.
Pull your hair back, wash your hands, put your gloves on.
If you're planning to use a numbing cream (totally optional, but perfectly fine if you want to take the edge off), apply it after your first cleanse, leave it on for about 20 minutes, then remove it thoroughly. Follow that with a cleanse using a 60% alcohol and purified water solution to make sure nothing is left on the skin before you begin.
5. Apply Your Hyaluronic Acid Serum Before You Start Needling
Here's something people sometimes get backwards — you apply serum before you needle, not just after.
Why? A good hydrating serum helps the device glide smoothly across your skin, which makes the whole experience more comfortable and more even. And because microneedling creates microchannels in the skin, those channels absorb whatever you put on them at a dramatically higher rate. You want that working in your favour.
Stick to hydrating, skin-friendly serums: hyaluronic acid, peptides, ceramides, EGF. These are your friends here.
What you don't want to use at this stage is anything with active ingredients — vitamin C, retinol, acids. Save those for later in your aftercare, when your skin has had time to calm down.
Apply enough serum to keep things comfortable as you work across the treatment area, and reapply as needed during the session.
You're Ready
That's honestly it. Five steps, a little preparation, and you're set up for a session that actually delivers.
One more thing worth saying: microneedling is a process, not a one-and-done. You'll likely notice something after your first session — maybe smoother texture, a kind of subtle glow — but the real transformation happens over consistent sessions, spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart to give your skin time to fully heal and rebuild.
If you haven't tried the SKINDELÚX Microneedling Pen yet, it's a great place to start — adjustable, beginner-friendly, and designed for real results at home. And if you need to restock on cartridges, we've got you covered there too.
Take care of the prep, trust the process, and your skin will thank you.
